Domichi, Seher to clash for title

KARACHI, Feb 14: Reigning national hard court women champion, Seher Khwaja and Michiko Domichi were through to the women’s singles final after they walked away with convincing victories over their opponents in the pre-finals of Open tennis championship at Karachi Gymkhana on Tuesday.

Seher downed Eman Malik 6-0, 6-2 while Michiko chalked up a 6-1, 6-1 win over Hira Channa.

Seventh seed Jahangir Rasheed pulled off a minor upset when he toppled fourth seed Abbas Raza 7-5, 6-3 to cruise into the last four of juniors U-17 singles.

Second seed Ghulam Abbas and third seed Mateen Arif also fought their way into the semis after convincing triumphs. Abbas got the better of Salman Ahmed 6-2, 6-0, while Mateen accounted for Sarmad 6-0, 6-0.

The winner of top seed Nasir Mushtaq-Zuhair Raza would complete the semifinal line-up.

Zuhair has already reached the boys’ U-15 singles final where he meets Sunny Williams.

Similarly, the boys’ U-13 singles has reached the final stage where Adil Kohari is pitted against Mustafa Zaidi.

Meanwhile, top seed Yasir Khan who arrived from Chinese Taipei late Monday night, appeared for his second round match. However, he could hardly sweat as his opponent Munir Memon from Hyderabad retired after 2-0 down in the first set for no valid reason leaving a bad taste.

Yasir who got a first round bye was supposed to play two matches on Tuesday but he appeared in one and plays the other on Wednesday.

Yasir’s elder brother, Davis Cupper Aqeel Khan, failed to make his appearance due to jet leg.

Jahangir Rashid bt S. Abbas Raza 7-5, 6-3; Mateen Arif bt Sarmad Munir 6-0, 6-0; Ghulam Abbas Panjo bt Salman Ahmed 6-2, 6-0.

Boys U-15 singles (semifinals):

Sunny Williams bt Saadur Rehman 6-3, 6-3; Zuhair Raza bt Mustafa Jamali 6-2, 6-2.

Boys U-13 singles (semifinals):

Adil Kohari bt Tayyab Imran 6-1, 6-1; Mustafa Zaidi bt Nameer Shamsi 6-1, 6-4.

Boys U-11 singles (semifinals):

Khawja Hamza bt Ammar 6-0, 6-1; Imran Mooraj bt Shehryar Ahmed 6-0, 3-6, 7-5.

Boys U-9 singles:

Imran Mooraj bt Umer Sereng 6-0, 6-0; Ali Mooraj bt Mustafa Bengali 6-0, 6-0; Khwaja Hamza bt Ali Mooraj 6-1, 6-0.
