‘Fisherman shot dead’

AHMEDABAD, Feb 13: An Indian fisherman was shot dead and four were detained by Pakistani coastguards on the high seas off western Gujarat state, the fishermens’ association and an official said on Monday.

“Members of the Gujarat Fishermen (association) have approached the police claiming that the person was shot dead by Pakistani marines,” Raju Bhagat, senior police officer of Jamnagar district said.

Indian coastguard official G.P. Raj confirmed a fisherman had been killed. The men had strayed into Pakistani waters and were spotted by an Indian patrol boat as they returned, he said. “They were being chased by the Pakistani patrol boats. We managed to rescue five fishermen and two boats. Four fishermen have been detained by the Pakistani authorities,” he added.—Reuters
