LAHORE: The Lahore High Court sought assistance from the Punjab advocate general to an appeal by Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf President Parvez Elahi.

The appeal challenges a single bench’s decision that had set aside a judicial magistrate’s order to discharge him in a corruption case.

A two-judge bench, headed by Justice Shehram Sarwar Chaudhry, directed the advocate general to provide assistance on Nov 1.

On Oct 3, a single bench had invalidated the magistrate’s decision to discharge Mr Elahi, with instructions to review the ruling. The prosecutor general had contested Mr Elahi’s exoneration in a case registered by the Anti Corruption Establishment (ACE), relating to alleged corruption in funds allocated for development projects in the Gujranwala division.

The prosecution argued that the magistrate did not have the authority to discharge the respondent.

Also, a judicial magistrate granted an application from the ACE to present Mr Elahi for physical remand in the corruption case on Oct 26.

The investigating officer submitted the application to seek permission for Elahi’s court appearance.

Magistrate Imran Abid approved the application and summoned the suspect from Adiala jail in Rawalpindi for Thursday.
