KOHAT: The four teams constituted of the relevant authorities have so far identified 1,000 undocumented Afghans during surveys of those living in camps, residential areas and doing business in the Kohat city.

Administrator for Afghan refugees, Qudratullah told Dawn on Thursday that there were 82,000 refugees in Kohat according to a survey.

However, the local traders put the figure at more than 150,000 only in the city.

Qudratullah said most of the ‘illegal Afghan immigrants’, including those living on valid permits, were leaving the country voluntarily.

MAN DROWNS IN INDUS: A motorcyclist fell and drowned in the Indus River after his bike collided with a van on the Khushalgarh Bridge in Gumbat tehsil here on Thursday.

Rescue 1122 officials said a medical team pulled out the body from the river with the help of local volunteers.

They shifted the deceased, Raheem Gul, 20, of Khushalgarh village to Rural Health Centre, Gumbat.

Meanwhile, the Jarma police on Thursday arrested a woman on Indus Highway while trying to smuggle five kilogrammes of hashish to southern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

SHO Fazal Mohammad leading a team found the hashish during checking of a woman travelling in a coach at the Muslimabad checkpost. He said the woman hailed from Mattani area of Peshawar.

Separately, assistant food controller Aizaz Khan sealed a godown on the Rawalpindi Road and seized 5,000 containers of substandard ghee and oil. He also fined the owner Rs30,000.

Similarly, assistant food officer of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Food Safety and Halal Food Authority Mohammad Vaqas Firdous sealed a restaurant on the University Road for poor hygiene. He also destroyed expired foodstuff in grocery shops.
