Marginalised GB

Published October 19, 2023

GILGIT-BALTISTAN (GB) is known for its beauty, tourism and magnificent glaciers, but the region has had its fair share of hardships over the years. Historically, GB did not have repre-sentation in Pakistan’s parliament, which left its people feeling marginalised and excluded from the decision-making process at the federal level.

Despite its significant contribution to Pakistan’s economy, particularly through tourism and natural resource extraction, GB has faced economic disparities. The residents have often felt that they do not receive an equitable share of the revenue generated from the local resources.

Millions of tourists flock to GB to enjoy the region’s breathtaking beauty, capturing it in reels and photographs. However, amidst this visual splendour, the region’s pressing issues often go unnoticed.

Challenges such as unemployment, inadequate basic facilities, food insecurity, electricity shortages and limited internet access continue to hamper educational and occupational opportunities. Besides, sectarian violence is a major threat to peace and stability in the region. Sadly, these critical concerns have received inadequate media coverage as well.

GB’s legal status has long been a subject of ambiguity. It is not officially recognised as a province, which has implications for its governance and legal framework.

This uncertainty has hindered the region’s political and economic develop- ment. The government must take steps to address the grievances of GB people.
