DERA ISMAIL KHAN: The police foiled a bid to smuggle 8,000 litres of Iranian diesel and 3,500 litres petrol during checking of vehicles here on Monday.

An official said a team led by sub-divisional police officer, Draban circle, Malik Aneesul Hassan along with SHO Attaullah Khan established a checkpoint to prevent smuggling of non-custom paid items.

He said during checking, the police recovered a total of 8,000 litres of Iranian diesel and 3,500 litres petrol from various vehicles.

He said the police handed over the Iranian oil to the customs authorities.

Meanwhile, the traffic police launched a crackdown on unregistered motorcycles and rickshaws in the city on Monday.

The operation started following an awareness drive conducted by the traffic police a few days ago to educate the citizens about traffic rules on the directives DSP traffic Inamullah Khan Gandapur.

During checking, the cops impounded 200 motorcycles and 50 three-wheelers at various points of the city after these were found unregistered or plying on roads without number plates.

The traffic police also removed encroachments in markets and on the circular road.

DSP Gandapur said the operation would continue to control traffic rules violations and overcome road accidents.

He said the operation entailed an action being taken against unregistered number plates, use of mobile phones while driving, flashlights, tinted glass, underage driving and encroachments.
