ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) on Tuesday nominated for, the third time, senior advocate of Supreme Court Akhtar Hussain to represent the

council as a member of the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) under Article 175-A of the Constitution, for two years.

The PBC meeting, presided over by Attorney General for Pakistan Mansoor Usman Awan, the former officio chairman of the council, after due deliberations decided to continue to back Mr Hussain as the PBC representative in the JCP — a constitutional body which elevates judges to superior judiciary.

Talking to Dawn after his nomination, Mr Hussain expressed the hope that the JCP meeting — likely to be held next month — may activate JCP’s rule-making committee with a clear mandate to solicit views of all stakeholders and, thereafter, devise draft rules and criteria for appointments for approval of the commission within four weeks.

It was the need of the hour to amend the judicial commission’s rules and frame more objective, transparent and measurable criteria and processes for nomination and appointments of judges, he said.
