CHITRAL: Two women and a man committed suicide in Chitral, the police said on Monday.

An official of Lower Chitral police told Dawn that Sharifa Bibi of Koghuzi village reportedly committed suicide by jumping into the Chitral River. Her body was later recovered by the divers of Rescue 1122 near the Chitral city.

The reason of her suicide is said to be her extreme grief over the sudden death of her husband, Barkatullah, due to cardiac arrest, last month.

The second incident took place in Booni, the district headquarters of Upper Chitral, where a university graduate, Khursheed Ahmed, 22, ended his life by shooting himself with a rifle.

Sub-divisional police officer, Mastuj, Mohyuddin told Dawn that the immediate reason of his suicide was his mental illness. However, he said the police were conducting an inquiry.

He said earlier, a female student from Raman village of Laspur valley committed suicide by jumping into the river from a bridge while returning from a computer centre, where she had gone accompanied by her father to apply online for BS nursing in the Aga Khan University, Karachi.

The police officer said the deceased, Shahab Saqib, developed frustration when she was told that due to her poor marks, her chances of admissions were very low. He said the young woman jumped into the river while crossing over a bridge.

During the last five days, two men and three women have ended their lives in different villages of Chitral.
