HARIPUR: Police on Monday claimed to have busted a gang of criminals involved in waylaying and snatching mobile phones and motorcycles from people.

Ghazi police station officials said they arrested an accused, Zabeehullah of Mohallah Sabzi Mandi, on suspicion of being involved in motorcycle snatching, and during preliminary investigation, he confessed to be part of a gang of criminals involved in waylaying, snatching mobile phones, cash and motorcycles in Haripur city, Ghazi and some areas of Punjab.

The officials said on the basis of the confession of the accused, the police arrested Shumal Khan, Izatullah and Ehsan, residents of Fauji Colony, Rawalpindi, and Dost Mohammad of Peshawar.

The police recovered four stolen motorcycles, two pistols, six mobile phones and some cash from their possession.

Meanwhile, the Haripur tehsil council chairman Samiullah Khan on Monday announced to join the ongoing protests against the bloated power bills.

He announced while speaking during a session of the council, which was called to discuss the single point agenda of staging protests against the hike in electricity tariff.

Mr Samiullah said the chairmen of different village and neighbourhood councils of the tehsil would join the protests on Tuesday (today). He said it was high time for all members of the tehsil council to express solidarity with the power consumers.

He said despite the fact the people of Haripur had sacrificed their lands for construction of Tarbela Dam, they were being treated unfairly.
