Forsaken Karachi

Published August 16, 2023

THE rising number of robbery and snatching cases in Karachi have become a major cause for concern, especially in Baldia Town and Moach Goth areas where the frequency of such criminal activities has reached an alarming level, posing a serious threat to the safety and wellbeing of the citizens.

Some distressing incidents recently happened in Moach Goth’s Suparco Road area, where three robberies took place within three consecutive days, resulting in the loss of belongings and cash amounting to about Rs1.2 million.

Also, I witnessed a brazen robbery on Hub River Road, near Mohajir Camp No. 3, close to Dehlvi Foods, which unfolded right in front of my eyes in broad daylight. Three motorcyclists targeted two individuals driving a car and managed to flee with Rs800,000.

What is disheartening is the seemingly relaxed, almost carefree attitude of the police at Mochko and Baldia police stations. It appears that they have adopted an apathetic approach towards their official duty to control crime in their respective jurisdictions.

The spike in crime rate and the indifference of the police have together resulted in fear among the local people. They think long and hard before stepping out of their homes. Even essential tasks are clubbed together to avoid going out frequently.

Regrettably, the people feel utterly helpless, as their hard-earned money is snatched away effortlessly within seconds. Moreover, these daily instances remain largely unnoticed by the public at large owing to the prevalent economic and political crises in the country.

The residents are left with no recourse but to live in a perpetual state of fear and anxiety. This is a pressing matter that deserves immediate attention of the authorities and even intervention from the security agencies. The behaviour being currently exhibited by relevant quarters is not only exacerbating the situation, but also perpetuating a nightmare for the residents.

The relevant authorities should take the matter seriously and address the increasing tension being spread by criminal street gangs and apathetic police force. People deserve enhanced security measures, including increased presence of security personnel, active surveillance and swift apprehension of the culprits.

Additionally, public awareness campaigns and community engagement initiatives should be launched to foster a sense of security and promote vigilance among the citizens. There is an urgent need to prioritise the safety and wellbeing of the citizens. The city should not be allowed to be taken hostage by criminal elements any longer. By taking immediate action, we can reclaim our streets and restore peace and tranquillity to our neighbourhoods.
