LARKANA, Feb 2: The irrigation department, in collaboration with the district government, is strengthening embankments of the Rice canal and Ghar Wah passing through the city.

Sources told this correspondent on Thursday that under the plan an amount of Rs2.221 million was being spent on lining of the Rice canal’s both sides from RD-247 to RD-252.

An amount of Rs5.000 million had been allocated for lining of the Rice canal and construction of retaining wall from RD-252 to RD-267 both sides of the canal in the city, Phase-II under annual development programme 2005-06, sources said.

The sole aim of constructing such walls is to save population residing in certain localities along the both banks of the Rice canal from threat of seepage of water and the flow of irrigation water will benefit to the tail-end abadgars in the area

Another big irrigation artery called Ghar Wah passing through the city is being revamped and redesigned by erecting retaining walls on its both banks.

Sources said an amount of Rs30.74 million had been earmarked for it and the work was in full swing from RD-0 to RD-2.5 both sides of the canal in the city.

These retaining walls on the both banks of Rice canal and Ghar Wah will serve as protection line from flood and seepage.

Both works will be completed with the stipulated time under ADP 2005-06.

SAU: A meeting of syndicate of the Sindh Agriculture University Tandojam will be held at the Z.A. Bhutto Agricultural College Dokri on Feb 4.

Sources told this correspondent on Thursday that the meeting was scheduled at ZABAC on recommendations of deans committee which earlier visited the college to review its progress and make recommendations for its upliftment.

Six deans of various faculties of the Sindh Agriculture University who had visited the college in the end of year 2005 included Prof Amir Ali Qadri, Dr Suleman Shaikh, Prof Saleh Sommro, Prof Noor Nabi Ansari, Prof Nizamani and the former principal of ZABAC Prof R.B. Mirbahar.

The syndicate meeting will be presided over by Dr Bashir Shaikh, chairman syndicate and vice chancellor of the Sindh Agriculture University Tadojam.

The university authorities had in principal agreed to handover the college with all facilities to the Sindh government but deans of different faculties and teachers association fought against it and restored its original status being the unit of Tandojam.

The increased admission to current semesters and pressure from deans forced the Sindh Agriculture University Tandojam to hold meeting at the spot and map out viable remedies for old ills that had been affecting over all atmosphere at the campus, sources said.
