LAPTOP SCHEME

LAPTOP SCHEME: The scheme to distribute laptops with the aim of encouraging research and innovation is great as majority of students at public-sector universities belong to the middle and lower middle classes and cannot afford such ‘luxuries’. A few years ago, the government had introduced a scholarship scheme for students on a need-cum-merit basis. Unfortunately, many students from affluent backgrounds ended up receiving the scholarship. The authorities should double-check the applications so that only deserving students may get a laptop.

NO PLACE FOR LAWS: Countries are governed by the laws they make and enforce. Those who do not respect the rule of law are bound to fail. Regrettably, the rule of law is not respected in our country. The system has failed to put a check on ambitions and egos. Unhindered exercise of power driven by personal likes and dislikes is hurting the country.

CASH CHAOS: Two precious lives were lost recently at Ehsaas Kafalat Programme payment centres in Larkana and Ghotki. Poor planning, intense heat, long waiting time, and lack of first aid led to these unfortunate deaths. The latest announcement of a one-time cash payment of Rs9,000 under the programme has left the payment centres crowded and in a state of turmoil. The government should add more cash collection points, increase staff strength, upgrade security, and provide drinking water to those waiting in long queues.

TAISER TOWN: Land encroachment of Taiser Town has been known to one and all for long, but no action has ever been taken against the mafia. Those who got land allotted in Scheme 45, Sector 25, Phase 2, Category R, have been the worst affected. The authorities should take action against the culprits, and hand over the plots to their rightful owners immediately.
