KARACHI: Like other parts of the country, Police Martyrs’ Day was observed in the city on Friday to pay tribute to the sacrifices of a total of 2,433 policemen who laid down their lives for the protection of life and property of the citizens while fighting against organised crimes in Sindh .
Senior police officers visited the homes of the martyred policemen while special ceremonies were held.
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah attended a programme, where he, along with Sindh police chief Ghulam Nabi Memon and Home Secretary Aijaz Shah, laid a wreath at the martyrs’ memorial and offered fateha.
The day began with a Martyrs run race at Seaview in the morning. The police, specially trained personnel, and members of civil society took part in the five-kilometre race.
IGP Memon, while paying homage to the martyrs, said: “Police Martyrs’ Day reminds us about the unforgettable sacrifices laid down by our policemen.”
Karachi police chief Javed Odho, DIGs and other senior officers were also present on this occasion.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Odho said that the purpose of observing Martyrs’ Day was to pay tribute to slain officers. He said the police department was not only providing a monthly salary to the heirs until their retirement time but was also helping their children with education and health facilities.
He said those who sacrificed their lives were not only heroes of the forces but also of the whole nation.
