KARACHI, Feb 1: Thousands of students, faculty members and guests on Wednesday visited the three-day book fair, being held under the Study Aid Project of Islami Jamiat Talaba at the University of Karachi.

The book fair, where 40 stalls of books, CDs and educational material have been set up, was inaugurated on Tuesday by Karachi University Vice Chancellor Dr Pirzada Qasim.

A number of dignitaries including Secretary-General Pakistan People’s Party Sindh Nafees Siddiqui and former Chief Justice of Sindh High Court Nasir Aslam Zahid visited the fair on Wednesday.

During his visit, Nafees Siddiqui lauded the IJT for regularly holding the books exhibition and said it deserved felicitation as despite ban on students’ activities, it was engaged in organizing constructive activities.

Mr Siddiqui said that formation of unions was democratic right of students as these unions used to help them in getting their issues resolved and added his party would continue supporting the right of students to get their representatives elected at educational institutions.

Justice (retd) Nasir Aslam Zahid suggested the students to approach the courts for lifting of bans imposed on their right of forming unions. He said under Article 9 of the Constitution, provision of basic necessities of life was the responsibility of the government so provision of quality of education automatically becomes an obligation of the state.—PPI
