KARACHI, Feb 1: The city government has chalked out short, medium and long term road safety programmes, including establishment of accident rescue centres, traffic police training programmes, construction and revamping of footpaths, and provision of facilities to pedestrians in the metropolis.

In line with the short term plan, the city government will hold various seminars, and training programmes on road safety education periodically, besides launching road TV shows at different public places, establishing accident rescue centres at major roads of the city, and initiating police training programmes.

As per the medium term plan, it will establish a road safety education park, install digital photographic cameras at different signals in the city, produce journals on road safety, and purchase accident mobile vans.

Under the long-term plan, the city government will establish driving training schools, construct and revamp footpaths all over the city, and introduce additional facilities to pedestrians, including construction of underpasses, and pedestrian bridges.

These programmes are aimed at creating public awareness about traffic laws and road safety codes to minimize the high ratio of pedestrian road accidents in the city, which have been estimated at 350 per year, said an official of the transport and communication department (TCD) of the city government.—Online
