KARACHI: Chairmen and vice chairmen of 16 of the total 25 town municipal corporations (TMCs) in Karachi have been elected unopposed, it emerged on Wednesday.
Of the 16 TMCs, eight were grabbed by candidates belonging to the ruling Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), six by Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) aspirants, while two TMCs were won by the Pakisan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI).
The PPP managed to win Gadap Town, Malir Town, Ibrahim Hyderi Town, Lyari Town, Manghopir Town, Baldia Town, Mauripur Town and Moriro Mirbahar Town as its candidates for the office of chairmen and vice chairmen returned unopposed from there.
The JI candidates won unopposed in Landhi Town, Model Colony Town, North Nazimabad Town, Nazimabad Town, Liaquatabad Town and Gulberg Town.
The PTI candidates emerged victorious in Shah Faisal Town and Saddar Town.
Polling for the offices of chairmen and vice chairmen of remaining nine towns will be held on Thursday (today). A tough contest is expected between the PPP and JI, which also got support of the PTI.
