KOHAT: An employee of the expanded programme on immunisation (EPI), working in Hangu, committed suicide on Thursday owing to non-payment of salary for one year.

Police said that the deceased, identified as Attaur Rehman, was disturbed over non-payment of salary. They said that he killed himself with a pistol.

EPI local head Dr Mohabat Khan, when contacted, said that 40 technicians were working in Hangu and Kohat under the integrated health programme. He said that they were inducted for a period of 42 months.

He said that they were also without salaries and waiting for their fate to be decided by the government. “I immediately went to Peshawar to meet the director and apprise him about the incident. I held discussion with him to save the jobs of the remaining staff,” he said.

JAIL: The authorities of Kohat jail have said that Pesco has suspended supply of electricity to the prison for the last few days.

They said that the jail was 700 prisoners and Pesco would be responsible for any untoward incident.

The jail superintendent, Abdul Bari, said in a statement that the prisoners and the staff were suffering owing to suspension of power supply. He said that suspension of power supply caused unrest among prisoners.

He demanded a separate feeder in the grid station and a direct line for the prison like that for Kohat University.
