KARACHI, Jan 24: Pakistan No2 Asim Shafik and upcoming youngster Yasir Khan booked their places in national side for the Davis Cup tie against Chinese Taipei from Feb 10-12 after finishing on top of their respective groups on Tuesday.

Islamabad-based Asim defeated Nomi Qamar on the fifth day of trials at Karachi Gymkhana to remain unbeaten in Group A (seniors) out of which two players would be selected for national side.

Jalil Khan overwhelmed Inam Gul of Peshawer in another match of seniors’ group.

Second berth from the seniors’ group would be decided after Jalil Khan-M Shafik match on Wednesday. Jalil is tied with Nomi Qamar with two wins apiece. Jalil earlier defeated Nomi in the Davis Cup trial match.

The Group B (juniors) out of which only one player was to be selected was headed by Yasir Khan who overcame Omer Baber to finish on top.

The other match of the group was won by Khurram Nazir who easily overcame Hidayatullah.

Aqeel Khan and Aisamul Haq were exempted from the trials.
