GILGIT: An awareness campaign has been launched in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) to sensitise students about climate change issues. Chief Secretary Mohyuddin Ahmad Wani launched the campaign among the students on Friday.

Speaking on the occasion, he said GB students needed to be educated in climate change impacts and sustainable management of natural resources.

He said Pakistan’s vulnerability to climate change and GB’s fragility required expedient steps for climate resilience.

“Students are our future and they need to be aware of this imminent threat and help mitigate the impacts. Under this initiative, school and college students would be sensitised with the problems of climate change being faced by Pakistan in general and GB in particular,” he said.

Renowned educational institutions of the country would assist the GB government in this regard, Mr Wani said.

Summer camps will be held at different institutions while youth would be taken for exposure visits to the vulnerable areas, glaciers and national parks to imbibe a sense of climate resilience in them.

In addition, more than 50 screens would be installed in schools/colleges to display documentaries, locally made videos, animated cartoons, lectures on climate mitigation and adaptation.

Moreover, climate expo and festivals are scheduled to be conducted at regional and provincial level the summer.

The aim is to protect the vulnerable climate of GB and produce a generation fully aware of imminent dangers so that they can become agents of climate resilience and prepared to adapt to the changing conditions.
