CONDUCIVE ENVIRONMENT: A prominent politician recently suggested that the minimum wage should be Rs35,000 per month. This is not too difficult a target, but first we have to create a conducive and business-friendly environment to allow firms and industries to thrive in a peaceful, profitable way. This will have a reciprocal effect, raising the salary-paying prowess of the entities.

WHERE IS THE SOLUTION?: This is with reference to the article ‘A perfect global storm’ (Jan 30) which enumerated a number of international issues, including global warming and the Russia-Ukraine war, and talked about a fragmented world, as described by the UN secretary-general. As a reader, I wonder what is the point of writing what everyone knows if one does not have any feasible solution or insight to share.

DOUBLE STANDARDS: Recently, when an Australian player was denied visa by the Indian government, perhaps owing to his Muslim identity and having roots in Pakistan, it was a clear sign of the prevailing state of human rights issues in the country. More troubling was Australia’s silent approval of the action as indicated by the fact that the visitors landed without the player concerned. This was blatant hypocrisy, as Australia had earlier called off its scheduled visit to Afghanistan on the basis of ‘human rights violations’.

OFFICIAL NEGLECT: Despite being the authority to ensure access to safe potable water in rural as well as slum areas in an urban setting, the Public Health Engineering Department of Balochistan has failed in carrying out its official duties. The situation in Dera Bugti is gloomy as thousands of gallons of water are being wasted owing to the leaking underground pipelines.
