KARACHI, Jan 14: A station house officer and two other policemen were arrested and placed under suspension on Saturday for accepting bribe and releasing three alleged cellphone snatchers in Liaquatabad Town.

SHO Shamim Shaheed police post sub-inspector Abid Shah, assistant sub-inspectors Mohammad Hussain and Aslam Narejo were found guilty of accepting bribe of Rs30,000 and releasing Raheel, Rashid and Shahid.

All the three policemen were arrested and put in the lock-up of the same police station where they had been posted. A case under Police Order 2002 was registered against the three policemen.

Liaquatabad town police officer Asif Aijaz told Dawn that police picked up three alleged bandits for snatching more than 60 cellphones, and recovered a stolen motorbike from them.

A deal was struck between the three policemen and the bandits in sum of Rs30,000 and all the alleged bandits were released.

The information was leaked and an inquiry was constituted into the matter. The inquiry committee found the three policemen guilty and recommended their arrest.

Mr Aijaz said that the police had re-arrested all the three bandits Raheel, Rashid, and Shahid, who confessed to having committed house robberies and snatched more than 60 mobile phones.

Police said Abdul Aziz, 65, was begging on a road when an unknown vehicle hit him and sped away. The beggar died on the spot and his body was shifted to a hospital for autopsy.
