SUSTAINABLE SOLUTION: While it is important to have compassion for those who need food and money, it is also important to recognise that beggary can be a complex issue with multiple underlying causes, such as poverty, mental health issues and addiction. Giving money to beggars is not a sustain- able solution. Instead, we should focus on addressing the root cause of it by investing in social welfare programmes, mental health services and affordable housing.

SOARING POLLUTION: Lahore has become the most polluted city in the world, reaching hazardous levels in recent times. Under directives from the judiciary to lessen the impact of smog on children, the number of school days has been curtailed. The authorities must reduce the working hours of industrial units, shopping markets and food outlets as well. There should be a rigid crackdown against all those who pollute the environment and make it toxic for human beings.

PARALYSED COMMISSION: New members of the Sindh Public Service Commission (SPSC) were recently appointed on the advice of the provincial chief minister. Previously, members were appointed by the same ‘competent authority’, and it remained dysfunctional for nearly two years because of corruption. Only the judiciary can come to the rescue in the current situation to save the institution from getting completely politicised.

WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE: I recently made use of Liquat Library to prepare for my examination, and it turned out to be a wonderful experience owing to the peaceful and facilitated environment there. Among other things, the library provides free Wi-Fi and air-conditioned halls to the students. The government should establish and maintain such libraries in every city.
