WORLD CUP

WORLD CUP: The recent football World Cup was fantastic. Its management was just as great as was the quality of play on the field. Who would have imagined that a small country like Qatar would be able to host the mega event in such an efficient manner? Unlike what some neighbouring countries have been doing while hosting international events, Qatar went around conducting the event exactly in a manner that resonated its own culture rather than a replication of the Western culture. Full marks to the organisers for holding such a big event in such a successful manner.

LACK OF DEFIBRILLATORS: Auto-mated external defibrillators (AEDs) help those experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. Their use for out-of-hospital emergency is low, and that explains the low survival rates in such cases. Most ambulances do not have an AED, and there are not many who know how to operate one. Gyms and health clubs are also required to have AED units, but generally do not have one.

GAS LOADSHEDDING: The Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) recently released gas availability schedule, which is a cruel joke with the consumers because the supply remains disrupted round the clock. Sindh produces more than 60 per cent of gas in Pakistan, but this gas is provided to other provinces, depriving the natives. Despite failing to supply gas, the SSGC continues to send monthly bills to domestic and commercial consumers. Is it legal to demand payment for a commodity not supplied?

PASSING THE BUCK: All political leaders claim success of others as their own achievements. Rare are those in the political history of Pakistan who accepted their failures. The current opposition is certainly not in the ‘rare’ category. It continuously disowns its failures, blaming others for the decisions it took. Only a true political entity owns its failures rather than blaming others.
