FAVOURING CULPRITS: This is with reference to the report ‘US keeps Pakistan on religious violators list’ (Dec 3). Different countries, including, Iran, Myanmar, Cuba, North Korea, Eritrea, have been placed on various lists, ranging from ‘countries of particular concern’ to the ‘blacklist on international religious freedom’. There is no mention of Israel and India where frequent killings take place as a matter of state policy. This itself is religious fanaticism.

LEARNING FROM MISTAKES: Recently, there has been a debate over the role of politicians in the fall of Dakha. The armed forces had their part in the debacle, but they also defended West Pakistan borders. Had the majority party in the West wing accepted the victory of the overall majority party, things might have been different. India had planned the crisis long before the actual crisis surfaced. We must all learn from the tragedy instead of blaming one segment or the other.

TABLE TALKS: In a recent political gathering, the opposition leader referred to Pakistan as ‘my nation’. The fact is that the nation belongs to no single individual. One would like to request the opposition leader and all other politicians to stop polluting the political landscape by launching virulent attacks on each other, and sit across the table to fight the various emergencies that the nation is currently facing for a long time.

FORGOTTEN PEOPLE: With nights getting cold, we must remember those displaced by floods which are living, at best, in tents without appropriate supplies and blankets. They have been neglected and subsequently forgotten amid political drama. Probably, these people and their problems are not as important as the tug of war in the country’s politics. Apart from the federal and provincial governments, the NGOs, too, have gone silent on the matter. Perhaps, they all are waiting for the crisis to get worse so that they may seek more financial aid.

If this new technocratic setup proves to be successful and efficient, it might just end up increasing centralisation of decision-making.
