SHEIKHUPURA, Jan 2: A groom was shot dead while a man and his son were killed for putting up resistance during two robbery bids on Monday.

Reports said the groom, Ghulam Nabi, was returning to Imamia Colony after his marriage ceremony in Lahore cantonment, along with his bride, relatives and friends. When they reached near the colony, the robbers blocked their way and started looting the participants of the marriage party.

Ghulam Nabi offered resistance to the robbers, on which they opened fire killing him instantly. Later, they fled away after snatching valuables and ornaments from women, including the bride, on gun point.

Ferozewala police are investigating.

In the other incident, in a Kot Abdul Malik locality on Monday four unidentified robbers entered Muhammad Shafi’s house and started collecting valuables. Shafi and his son Sakandar offered resistance, on which the robbers opened fire killing both on the spot and critically injuring Shafi’s wife. She was admitted to a local hospital.

Factory Area police are investigating.

CRACKDOWN: Nankana Sahib police claimed to have arrested 318 proclaimed offenders, 72 court absconders, including 23 alleged members of seven gangs during the crackdown on anti-social elements.

District Police Officer Zulfiqar Hameed informed journalists here on Monday more than Rs5 million booty, besides a large number of illegal weapons, had been recovered from the arrested outlaws.

The DPO said the a Boba, Feeqa, Riajo, Achu, Faqi, Sufyani and Ahmy gangs were involved in several incidents of dacoity, kidnap for ransom, highway robbery, theft and other heinous crimes.

He claimed crime rate in the district had gone down because of police efforts.

The police were making all out efforts to protect life and property of the citizens and maintain law and order in the district, he said. In rural as well as urban areas of the district, Tehkri Pehra and Choki Dara systems were working successfully, the DPO said and added special squads had been deployed to petrol on the main roads to control highway crime.
