KOHAT: Hundreds of handcarts were removed from Jail Road in Kohat city in a major crackdown on encroachments.

The handcarts were shifted to Sasta Bazaar, built for them a decade ago, to ensure smooth flow of traffic on the road.

The chief traffic warden, Rauf Khan, told Dawn on Monday that it had become difficult for them to control traffic owing to the presence of illegal handcarts on the road. He said that more than 250 handcarts were moved from the road.

The tehsil municipal officer, Amin Gul, said that all the handcarts outside the old bus stand were illegal and were committing contempt of court by refusing to vacate the place.

The chairman of the grand businessmen alliance, Haji Abid, told Dawn that Sasta Bazaar was not opened for the handcarts but for butchers, fruit and vegetable sellers and chicken shops, etc.

PPP: PPP provincial secretary of information MPA Amjid Afridi has said that corruption of former prime minister Imran Khan is being exposed.

Addressing a function after the inauguration of Sayyab-Bilitang road the other day, he said that Imran Khan could not befool people by making speeches. He said that he bought gifts from Toshakhana at low rates and sold them in the open market at high prices. He said that he had not paid income tax and also did not show the income from gifts in the annual returns.

Mr Afridi said that PTI would taste a defeat in the next general elections.

Arrest: Police claimed to have arrested 24 proclaimed offenders, their 143 facilitators, 16 drug peddlers and 480 suspects in the district.

A statement said that the arrested people were shifted to prison after registration of cases against them. The seizure included four Kalashnikovs, two Kalakovs, two repeaters, six rifles, 11 shotguns, 65 pistols, 50 kilograms of hashish, and 900 grams of ice.
