MENACE OF BEGGARY

MENACE OF BEGGARY: The number of beggars in front of the University of Karachi has increased rather irritatingly. As the university points stop, they chase the students like sharks and do not leave until they get what they want. It wastes a lot of time, forcing the students to often be late for their classes. Besides, it also carries serious security implications. When unauthorised access to campus is restricted, one wonders how they manage to be inside the campus. The university authorities should take notice of this irritating matter.

RED LINE PROJECT: The Red Line bus service will undoubtedly reduce the commuting woes of the people of city, providing them a better transportation service, but the construction work of such projects has left the sites in the lurch. The residents of particular areas undergo many a hardship because of the narrowing or blocking of the main routes to downtown areas. The relevant authorities would do well to plan such projects in a way that may not create hurdles for others.

RISING DISABILITY: The rise in disabilities in people is alarmingly high in Pakistan. Currently, the ratio of physically and mentally challenged children is 16 per 1,000. Unfortunately, many a parent consider this issue a religious one and resort to spiritual healing, such as getting an amulet to resist the disease or disability. Massive awareness campaigns are required so that people may take such disabilities for what they actually are.

UNJUST TAXES: This is with reference to the report “Karachi’s DHA residents in uproar over CBC plan to revise property tax” (Nov 14) and a public notice to this effect (Oct 20). The increase in property tax by Cantonment Board Clifton (CBC) is clearly unjust. The CBC administration must revise its decision, and should, instead, work on the betterment or provision of basic amenities. Even matters related to basic facilities are not handled efficiently by the CBC.
