KARACHI, Dec 28: The government has decided to constitute a traffic management board in Karachi to improve the traffic management system. This was decided here on Wednesday in a high-level meeting in the office of Sindh Chief Secretary Fazalur Rehman. The proposed board would be headed by the City Nazim, while its other members would be representatives of administration, police and experts from private sector. The chief secretary would issue notification for setting up of the board during the current week.

City Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal, addressing the meeting, said that he wanted to improve traffic police system in the city in connection with the Tameer-i-Karachi Programme so that the common man, especially pedestrians, could be benefited from it.

The meeting reviewed the performance of 111 traffic signals for 7400-kilometer roads in Karachi.

It noted that the section officers posted in the traffic police, by ignoring merit, had failed to deliver.

It decided that for revamping the traffic management system officials of administration, city government and police, would take joint steps.

Meanwhile, City Nazim has constituted a committee to improve the performance of Karachi Water and Sewerage Board.

KWSB deputy managing director (planning) Shahid Salim would be the convener of the committee while former KWSB chief engineer M M Mehdi, Farrukh Nasim of Ferguson Associates and KWSB secretary Mehmud Qadir would be its members.—PPI/APP
