THE World Health Organisation (WHO) has raised concerns over cholera outbreak in Balochistan, which has affected 16 districts this year, including Turbat. At least 13,149 cholera cases have so far been reported in Turbat alone; mostly affecting women and children.

Cholera is an acute infectious disease caused by contaminated water and unhealthy food. It can be fatal if the patients do not receive proper treatment at an early stage. Therefore, it is imperative to raise awareness about preventive measures, such as drinking potable water, eating healthy food, and, most importantly, providing proper medical treatment to the patients.

Hospitals in Turbat are already receiving a lot of cholera patients. Some patients from rural areas are referred to urban hospitals for proper treatment due to lack of staff, medicines, beds and other facilities. Many of them suffer on the way due to the poor conditions of the roads. The exact figure of patients in rural areas has been missing as many cases go unreported.

Cholera requires immediate attention because it can be fatal if left untreated. The health department must ensure the availability of medicines and funds to meet the needs of the patients. The government should also conduct aware-ness campaigns to educate the people and to control the rising number of cases.
