PESHAWAR: A training session was organised for the young sports reporters here on Friday. It was organised by Pakistan Sports Writers Association in collaboration with Sports Writers Association, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Speaking on the occasion, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Secretary Information Arshad Khan said journalists were playing an important role in country’s development, and that was the reason journalism had become the fourth pillar of the state. He said journalists were responsible for fulfilling their professional responsibilities while filing a story. He claimed the information department was playing key role in ensuring welfare of mediapersons as a number of measures had been taken for the community at the press club level. He urged the young sports reporters to work with passion. “There is an opportunity for them to learn from this program,” he added.

Deputy director operations, sports, Jamshed Baloch said the government had allocated over Rs26 billion for provision of modern sports facilities to youth, besides establishing separate gymnasiums for women across the province.

He said sports journalism played key role in promotion of sports in the province.

Pakistan Cycling Federation president Syed Azhar Ali Shah said sports journalists had a key role to play in promotion of sports by pinpointing flaws in government’s policies.

He advised young sports journalists to be aware of every game rules, regulations, scoring or points. He said close coordination of sports organisations, players and sports journalists guaranteed success of any event.

Administrator Qayyum Stadium, Peshawar, Syed Jafar Shah, president Pakistan Sports Writers Federation Amjad Aziz Malik, president Peshawar Press Club M Riaz and senior sports journalist Ijaz Khan also spoke on the occasion.
