Islamabad edge Lahore in basketball opener

ISLAMABAD: Islamabad Blues made a comeback in the fourth quarter of the match to edge out Lahore 48-41 in the opening match of the Women’s National Basketball Champ­ionship here at the Pakistan Sports Complex on Monday.

Asma Bibi and Aimal combined to score 30 points for Islamabad Blues and played a vital role in their team’s victory. Asma collected 18 while Aimal contributed 12.

According to Federal Basketball Associ­ation’s general secretary Ouj-e-Zahoor, eight top teams including defending champions Wapda, Karachi, Rawalpindi, Islamabad Whites, Army and Peshawar are participating in the tournament. The teams are divided into two pools.

Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) director general retired Col. Asif Zaman graced the occasion as chief guest in the opening ceremony while Counselor of the Embassy of the Kyrgyz Republic Moldaliev Melis, Pakistan Basketball Federation president retired Brig Iftikhar Mansoor, PBBF secretary general Khalid Bashir and PSB deputy DG Mansoor Ahmed Khan were among those who attended the opening ceremony.
