KARACHI: Mr Altaf Gauhar, Editor-in-Chief of Dawn group of newspapers, was yesterday [Aug 7] produced before the Full Bench of the High Court of Sind and Baluchistan. This was Mr Gauhar’s first appearance in a court of law since his incarceration six months ago under the Defence of Pakistan Rules. Mr Gauhar, who is presently lodged in the Karachi Central Prison, was produced before the Full Bench under the orders of the Court, in connection with the writ petition filed by Mrs Zarina Gauhar, challenging her husband’s detention.

The writ petition filed on his behalf, and three other petitions, involving constitutional points were taken up for regular hearing before the Full Bench of the High Court comprising the Chief Justice, Mr Justice Tufail Ali Abdul Rahman, Mr Justice Mohammad Haleem, and Mr Justice Fakhruddin G. Ebrahim. The other three petitions are related to the arrest of Mr Wazir Ali, cancellation of the declaration of the “Sun” and the seizure of its press, and the refusal of the Government to allow Mr Sharifuddin Pirzada to go abroad.
