A CLOSED ECONOMY: Many of the ills afflicting the country’s economy may be addressed to a large extent if the policy-makers decide to opt for a closed economy under which people are left with no choice but to depend on goods produced within the country. However, to follow the path, a country should first have industries to produce enough goods to satisfy the public demand. As things stand, the country is not industrially self-sufficient, but a beginning has to be made somewhere. Let us do it now.

LIBRARY WOES: The Iqbal Memorial Library in Kandhkot is devoid of basic facilities, such as internet facility, drinking water and sufficient number of ceiling fans. Despite the fact that the library is located in the centre of a busy market, it has no way of cutting out the constant noise because the air-conditioners are not functional and all doors and windows have to be kept open to ensure ventilation. Besides, the library timings are from 10am to 5pm when most people are usually busy with their educational and work commitments. The locals deserve a better deal.

WATER TABLE: The only source of freshwater in Waziristan area is underground aquifers. With water table plummeting because of excessive pumping for both household and agricultural uses, the inhabitants struggle to have enough water to keep their lives moving peacefully. The government must address the issue on a priority basis.

OFFENSIVE BEHAVIOUR: As things stand today, the provincial assemblies have become more of a circus, especially in Punjab. Recently, a member made an offensive sign when asked to leave the assembly hall, while in another instance, a male politician misbehaved with a female member. Such incidents tarnish the image of the country. Party leaders on both sides of the divide should take strict action against those involved in misconduct.
