PESHAWAR: Traffic police here on Tuesday announced to launch a special campaign next week for safeguarding rights of transgender persons in the public transport.

According to a statement issued here, it was decided in a meeting between Chief Traffic Officer Abbas Majeed Marwat and the representatives of the transgender persons, who informed him about the problems faced by them in the public transport.

The meeting was attended by president of TransAction Alliance Farzana Riaz, Mahi Gul, Divia, Komal Murad, SP Raheem Hussain and other senior police officials.

The transgender persons informed Mr Marwat that excessive fares were charged in the public transport whereas music was played loudly on seeing the transgender persons in the vehicle.

Mr Marwat told the delegation that earlier they highlighted their problems in the BRT buses after which the issue was raised with the relevant officials.

He asked them to forthwith contact traffic police on the helpline 1915 when they faced any problem in public transport. He said that next week they would start special campaign to be participated by the officials of the traffic police, transport and BRT.

He issued on spot orders to the relevant officials to take strict action against those charging excessive fares from the transgender persons.
