KARACHI: A suspected robber was shot dead and a policeman wounded in an encounter in Surjani Town in the small hours of Saturday morning, police said.

They added that two armed robbers were looting people travelling in a jeep and rickshaw in Khuda Ki Basti when a police patrol reached there at around 3.20am.

On seeing the police, they resorted to firing, resulting in bullet injuries to Constable Mansoor, 27. The police returned fire killing one of the suspects, later identified as Naeem Yaqoob, 25.

His accomplice managed to escape, they added.

The police claimed to have recovered one TT pistol and a motorbike and looted goods from his custody.

The policeman suffered a bullet wound in the shoulder and was moved to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where his condition was stated to be out of danger.

Surjani SHO Haji Sanaullah said that the deceased, who was a resident of Taiser Town, was a habitual offender and over a dozen criminal cases were registered against him. He was arrested in three cases but was enlarged on bail.
