KARACHI: President Zulfikar Ali Bhutto yesterday [May 23] announced that the stock exchanges in the country will reopen tomorrow. … The reopening of the stock exchanges, closed since Dec 4 last year, has been a persistent demand of the business community. The President said that trading in shares of the industries registered and wholly-located in East Pakistan would remain suspended. … He assured industrialists that the government would not take over any other units of industries, apart from the units already taken over in 10 categories of industries.

[Meanwhile, according to our staff reporter,] The Presidential Science Adviser, Prof. Abdus Salam, said in Karachi yesterday [May 23] that the Pakistan-India Subcontinent “will not be left a nuclear-free zone” with India’s recent declaration that she will explode a nuclear device in the near future. Talking about India’s intentions to become a nuclear Power in an interview to “Dawn”, Prof. Salam said, “while Pakistan is alive to the implication of India’s actions, it is a great pity that tension cannot be reduced in this area”. He said that it would have been much better if the Subcontinent was made a nuclear-free zone like Latin America.
