SAHIWAL: The Rescue 1122 recovered the body of a 10-year-old boy who had drowned in 9-L Canal on Sunday.

Sajjad Diyal, station in-charge of Rescue 1122, identified the boy as Abdul Rehman, son of Muhammad Akram, a resident of Mohallah Noor Park.

He told Dawn the body had been handed over to the family of the deceased.

Rehman went with his friends to have a bath in the canal that was having seven to eight feet deep water.

Reports said Rehman’s friends had tied a rope with a tree and they were taking dips in the canal by holding the rope or tying it with their body.

When it was Rehman’s turn, the rope accidently snapped and he drowned in the canal. Around seven divers of Rescue 1122 started a search operation to find his body.

On Monday, Rehman’s father Ikram along with local residents staged a protest at Pakpattan Chowk and demanded closure of the canal.

Ghala Mandi police were called along with District Emergency Officer Dr Khalid, who negotiated with the protesters and told them the search operation was going on and there was no use of the canal closure.

It is said the boy’s family and other residents remained at the canal till his body was recovered. Police and the locals also helped the divers in searching for the body of the boy.
