HYDERABAD, Dec 5: The vice-chancellor of the Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences, Professor Jan Mohammad Memon, has said that the Sindh chief minister has approved a proposal for setting up a trauma centre at the LUMHS. Professor Memon was speaking as a chief guest at the ceremony of the third intensive surgical course held at the university on Sunday.

He said the establishment of a new facility would benefit people and new opportunities would be made available in terms of jobs and training.

He announced establishment of a centrally air-conditioned, 500-seat library at the university for post graduate trainees and students.

The vice-chancellor said it would serve as a leading modern postgraduate library in the province.

He said the facility had recently been approved by the higher authorities concerned.

Professor Memon expressed hope that the library would start operating from the next year.

He announced provision of a modern laparoscope surgical facility at the LUMHS.

The vice-chancellor said a programme had also been devised to impart training to all postgraduate students in general surgery with modern laparoscopic surgical procedures.

He said the university faculty was striving to provide the highest standards in the healthcare service, research, training and academia.

Appreciating the efforts of course organizers, especially Professor A. Sattar Memon (chair, surgeon), he said the university had the best of surgeons who had proved their worth and potential around the world.

He urged the postgraduate students to explore advancements in their disciplines through various means including the Internet.

The dean of the faculty of surgery and allied sciences, Professor Ghulam Ali Memon, announced that the evening session for students would start soon at the campus. For that, arrangements were being finalized, he said.

He said two-week intensive course for postgraduate trainees was attended by 47 participants.

Besides, the local faculty, leading surgeons from Karachi, Larkana and Nawabshah, including Professor Sikandar Shaikh, Professor Aijaz Memon, Dr Rufina Soomro, Professor Saeed Qureshi, Professor Akbar Ghumro, Professor Dahri and Dr Ghulam Ashar Channo facilitated the course.

At the end of the course, certificates were distributed among participants and facilitators.
