RAWALPINDI: Three police officials, including a sub-inspector, were dismissed from service after they were found guilty of illegally detaining a citizen and freeing him after extorting money from him.

The three officials – a sub-inspector and two constables – were posted at Morgah police station. They took a man into custody from a checkpoint, detained him in the police station and released him only after he gave them money.

Following complaints by the victim, City Police Officer (CPO) Omer Saeed Malik ordered an inquiry in which the officials were found guilty, which led to their suspension and subsequent dismissal.

The police spokesman said the citizen had complained that the three officials of Morgah police station had insulted him and demanded bribe.

Following the complaint, CPO Omar Saeed Malik directed the SSP Investigation to probe the matter, he said.

After the inquiry found them guilty, SSP Investigation Ghazanfar Ali Shah dismissed the officials.

Meanwhile, a constable was shot and injured when he attempted to defuse a clash between two groups in the limits of Saddar Bairooni area on Wednesday.

Police said Constable Abdul Qadeer came under gunfire when he went to a scene where two parties were quarrelling.

He said when Abdul Qadeer reached the scene, he was also shot and injured. The accused, however, managed to escape from the scene. The injured was shifted to Benazir Bhutto Hospital (BBH) where he was stated to be in stable condition.

Shortly after the incident, police reinforcement led by DSP Saddar Division, reached the scene and launched a search for the culprits. Later, CPO Malik visited the BBH and inquired after the health of the injured constable.
