KARACHI: As many as 267 objections and representations on delimitation of new local government constituencies in the seven districts of the city have been filed with the regional election commissioner and the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) is set to notify the final list of union councils and union committees/wards on March 24, it emerged on Tuesday.

Sources told Dawn that the ECP would issue the final list after disposing of all objections and representations on the LG constituencies.

They said that 65 objections and representations, the highest among all, were filed in South district followed by 56 in Keamari.

As many as 43 objections were filed in Malir district, 32 in East, 28 in West, 23 in Korangi and 20 in district Central.

Total 121 objections filed by residents of South and Keamari districts

The seven districts of the city have been divided into 26 towns, 233 UCs and 932 wards.

Four towns were made in Korangi district — Model Colony Town, Shah Faisal Town, Landhi Town and Korangi Town — comprising 37 UCs.

South district has two towns — Saddar Town and Lyari Town — and 26 UCs.

In West, three towns — Orangi Town, Mominabad Town, Manghopir Town — were carved out with 26 UCs.

In Malir district, three towns — Gadap Town, Malir Town and Ibrahim Hyderi Town — with 30 UCs were created.

Five towns were created in Central district — New Karachi Town, North Nazimabad Town, Gulberg Town, Liaquatabad Town and Nazimabad Town — with 45 UCs.

The sources said the process of delimitation in the province would complete after the issuance of final list of UCs.

They said March 22 would be the last date to communicate the decisions of the authorities to the delimitation committees while the final list would be published on March 24.

The sources said the first phase of the LG election in the province is likely to begin in May.

The election would be held on the existing electoral lists, the sources said.
