KARACHI: An infant was allegedly killed with some sharp-edged object in her young parents’ home in Liaquatabad No. 7 on Thursday evening, according to police and emergency services.
SSP Central Maroof Usman said mark of a cut, apparently inflicted with a knife or some similar object, was visible on the infant’s neck.
A spokesperson for the Edhi Foundation, whose ambulance transported the body to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for legal formalities, said that the baby, Zameel, looked three-week-old but the police guessed she could be four-eight weeks old.
The SSP quoted her 18-year-old mother as claiming that someone sneaked into her single-room house and forcefully pushed her. She said her head hit against the wall and she fell unconscious. She said she knew nothing what happened next.
According to Liaquatabad police investigation officer (IO) Mohammed Arif, the woman told him that apparently the intruder was a ‘thief’. However, the officer said the suspect did not take away anything from the house. The gold, cash and mobile phone were present there. He said the crime weapon was also not found anywhere inside.
The baby’s father, 24-year-old Saad, who was away somewhere in the city when the incident took place, was in a state of shock and, therefore, the police could not record his statement.
Additional police surgeon Dr Summaiya Syed said the baby’s father and grandfather took away the body without allowing doctors to fulfill legal formalities.
She said she was trying to persuade the police to bring back the body for an autopsy as the case had a ‘very suspicious history.’
Meanwhile, the Edhi Foundation shifted the baby’s body to its morgue at Sohrab Goth.
