LAHORE, Nov 26: Top seed Aqeel Khan will clash with his Wapda colleague Nomi Qamar in the men’s singles final of the National grass court tennis championship at Bagh-i-Jinnah on Monday.

Aqeel overcame the challenge of fourth seed Shahzad Khan in straight sets in the first pre-final while second seed Nomi was fully extended by Pakistan coach and former Davis Cupper Rashid Malik before he won in three sets in the other semifinal on Saturday.

Malik who ousted third seed Jalil Khan on Friday, looked set to repeat the feat when he took the first set but Nomi fought back and went on to take the next two for a place in the final.

Reigning ladies’ singles champion Maryam Raheem was through to the final with a straight-set win over Sara Mehboob.

Boys U-17 semifinals: Umer Babar bt Tanveer Ashiq 6-4, 7-5, Khurram Nazir bt Ahmed Aslam 7-6, 6-4

Girls U-17 quarterfinals: Sara Mehboob bt Anosha Aslam 6-3, 5-7, 6-4, Quratul Ain bt Ushna Sohail 6-3, 6-0, Sara Mansoor bt Nitasha Afridi 6-0, 6-1, Saba Aziz bt Munaza Malik 6-1, 6-0.

Men’s doubles quarterfinals: Mehmood Khan-Inam Gul bt Ahmed Aslam-Talal Khan 6-2, 6-0, Rashid Malik-Aqeel bt Khurram Nazir-Umer Babar 6-3, 6-2.

Boys U-13 quarterfinals: Sadanul Haq bt Zamyad Zafer 6-0, 6-2.

Ladies’ singles semifinal: Maryam Raheem bt Sara Mehboob 6-4, 7-5.

Veterans’ doubles: R I Singh-Raju bt Laeeq Pirzada-Naveed Najum 6-2, 6-1, Rao Iftikhar-Rai Zahid Zafer bt Ch Fayyaz-Liaquat Toor 6-1, 6-2.—APP
