GILGIT: The two-day Baltistan Ice Hockey Championship concluded in Skardu on Wednesday.

The event was held to spread awareness about impact of climate change, melting glaciers, conservation of wildlife and importance of ecological balance.

Four teams from Baltistan division, including, Siachen Red, Baltoro Blue, Biafo Yellow and Chogo Lugma Green participated in the competitions.

The event was held at the Ice Rink, District Park, Halmaranga.

Siachen Red won the final match beating Chugo Lugma Green by one goal.

Local children also performed ice skating.

GB senior minister Raja Zakaria Khan Maqpoon, Canadian High Commissioner to Pakistan Wendy Gilmour, civil and military officials, and a large number of local people attended the concluding ceremony.

The event was organised by the district administration.

Assistant commissioner, Skardu Waqas Johar told Dawn that it was the first ice hockey event in Baltistan.

He said a large number of people participated in the event amid freezing temperature, thus affording an opportunity for enjoyment and promotion of winter sports.

The basic theme of the event was to create awareness about the impact of climate change.
