LOWER DIR: Unknown robbers took away Rs22.8 million cash from two currency dealers in Timergara city here on Wednesday after injuring them over resistance, witnesses and the police said.

They said the culprits came in a car, and tried to snatch a bag of currency notes carried by a man. However, when he put up resistance they opened fire, leaving two persons, identified as Zubair, 32, and Naseer, 25, injured near their shop. Both of them were shot in the legs.

The robbers took the bag containing Rs22.8 million away, according to the owners. The injured persons were shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital, Timergara, where their condition is stated to be normal.

The Timergara police registered a case against unknown accused and started a search for them.

Meanwhile, the traders’ community observed a shutter down strike and blocked the main road over the incident. They demanded immediate arrest of the robbers.

PPP MEETING: Pakistan Peoples Party leaders said on Wednesday the PPP had rendered sacrifices of its workers for the sake of democracy and curbing militancy in the country.

They were speaking at a public meeting held in Miskini Dara area of Jandol.

PPP provincial president Najamuddin Khan, divisional president Bakht Baidar Khan, Akhunzada Chatan, former provincial finance minister Muzaffar Said and others spoke on the occasion.

The PPP leaders said the party always raised the voice for the poor and working class. They said the PPP would increase the compensation amount of the Benazir Income Support Programme to Rs15,000 per three months if it came to power at the centre.

On the occasion, Mr Najamuddin said it was an honour for him to lead the party of ‘martyrs and brave people’.
