KARACHI: An earthquake of 4.8 magnitude on the Richter scale jolted parts of coastal areas of Sindh on Thursday afternoon.
According to the website of the National Seismic Monitoring Centre, the epicentre of the quake was some 50km southwest of Badin at a depth of 17km. It was recorded at 2.46pm.
“Our staff in Islamabad didn’t receive any public telephone call about tremors in any part of Sindh,” said Sardar Sarfaraz of the Met department while responding to a question about its impact in the coastal areas of the province.
“Tremors are not experienced in far-off areas when an earthquake has shallow depth,” he added. However, there were reports in the social media about people talking about tremors in parts of Karachi, Badin, Sujawal and Thatta district’s Chohar Jamali, Mirpur Bathoro, Jati and some other coastal areas.
Earlier in the day, an earthquake with a magnitude of 3.7 jolted Guwahati and other parts of the Indian state of Assam.
The epicenter of the earthquake was 35km west of Tezpur in Assam’s Sonitpur district at a depth of 25km.
