ISLAMABAD: The management of the Capital Development Authority (CDA) on Wednesday started work on the plastic road concept, the goal of which is to recycle plastic waste and help in construction of roads.

According to CDA, 500 to 600 tonnes of municipal waste is collected in Islamabad on a daily basis which contains 150 to 180 tonnes of plastic waste. By recycling the collected plastic, environmental pollution can be reduced.

A press release issued by the authority stated that in line with directions of chairman CDA, a trial project has been started at F-9 Park.

This is the first project of its kind in Pakistan which is being launched in collaboration with a private company. It is pertinent to mention here that CDA signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU), a month ago with a private beverage company, under which work has now been started on a test project, the press release said.

Chairman CDA Amer Ali Ahmed on Tuesday inaugurated the project.

The press release added if results of the project are positive, the concept will be utilised for roads of Islamabad.

“The test engineering results of the project will be taken from tomorrow, after which this technology will be introduced in other parts of Islamabad for road construction while this technology will be transferred to asphalt plant of Machinery Pool Organisation (M PO) after evaluating results,” the press release stated, adding it is expected that plastic roads will be more sustainable and durable than conventional roads.
