ISLAMABAD: A senior official of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (Nato) on Wednesday assured Pakistan of increased cooperation over Afghanistan.

The Inter-Services Public Relations said that Nato’s Senior Civil Representative Stefano Pontecorvo in a meeting with Army Chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa promised “enhance cooperation with Pakistan on Afghanistan”.

Mr Pontecorvo also expressed the hope that Nato countries would have regular engagements with Pakistan on bilateral issues.

Nato’s cooperation with Pakistan has grown over the years. It includes annual military-to-military staff talks and Pakistani military officers’ participation in training activities with Nato, according to the transatlantic alliance’s website.

Nato is readying for future potential challenges that could arise from Afghanistan under the Taliban regime.

Foreign Secretary Sohail Mahmood, while talking to the Nato delegation, shared Pakistan’s perspective on the latest developments in the region and stressed the importance of a peaceful and stable Afghanistan, according to a statement.
