UNITED NATIONS: The United Nations Security Council early today [Sept 26] all but unanimously called on Israel to take no further measures to alter the character of occupied Jerusalem. The resolution to that effect was approved by all Security Council members, with the abstention of Syria…. The Council called on Israel to reverse all measures already undertaken in the occupied section affecting the status of the city.
The resolution was designed as a follow-up to two others … which called upon Israel to rescind all measures taken to alter the status of Jerusalem since the Israeli occupation began with 1967 Middle East war.
It said: “The Security Council: Reaffirmed the two previous resolutions. Deplores the failure of Israel to respect the previous resolutions. Confirms … that all legislative and administrative actions taken by Israel to change the status … of Jerusalem … are totally invalid. Urgently calls upon Israel to take no further steps in the occupied section of Jerusalem to change its status, or to prejudice the inhabitants rights or just and lasting peace. Requests the Secretary-General in consultation with the Council President, and using such instrumentalities as he may choose including a representative or a mission, to report to the … Council … within 60 days on the implementation of this resolution.” — News agencies
