GILGIT: Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Election Commissioner Raja Shahbaz Khan on Wednesday appointed Justice Malik Inayatul Rehman, Justice Shakeel Ahmed and Justice Johar Ali as members of the election tribunal for disposal of pending poll petitions.

According to separate notifications, the appointments were made in pursuance of the provisions of the section 140 of the Election Act, 2017, and in consultation with the GB Chief Court.

The petitions relate to GB Assembly polls held in 2020.

The opposition PML-N and PPP had demanded establishment of the election tribunal.

In a separate development, the Karakorum International University (KIU) vice-chancellor suspended the admission of 11 students on the recommendations of the security and student disciplinary committee.

Varsity’s director public relations Mir Tazeem Akhtar said these students were found involved in organising a gathering at the university’s Gilgit campus on Sept 3 without permission.

He said the vice-chancellor had also banned the entry of these students to the campus.

He, however, said the university had decided to provide the students with an opportunity to appear before the disciplinary committee.
