PESHAWAR: A senior lawyer and his wife were shot dead over a land dispute in Kheshgi Payan area of Nowshera district on Wednesday, the police said.

District police officer Dr Mohammad Iqbal told Dawn that the lawyer, Shaukat Ali Khan, along with his wife was returning from a funeral in the area, when two persons opened fire on them, killing the couple on the spot.

He said the attackers, identified as Zafar and Umar Khan, managed to escape the scene on a motorcycle.

Dr Iqbal said the police after registering an FIR had started a search operation to arrest the accused. He said the double murder occurred over a land dispute.

Meanwhile, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Bar Council announced a strike on Friday to protest the murder of Mr Shaukat, according to a statement.
